A new Viagra prescription pill is being developed by a British pharmaceutical company to treat erectile dysfunction.
The first is an oral tablet called E-Volt.
It’s the first of a new class of treatments called ‘phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors’ or PDE-5 inhibitors. It’s the second, and the third in the class, to be developed by Pfizer and is expected to be sold by Novartis in the UK in the first half of this year.
The British company is testing the drug on men who have mild to moderate erectile dysfunction, and it’s hoped to be approved by the US FDA in the next three years.
It’s also one of a new class of treatments called ‘erectile dysfunction drugs’ or ED drugs. They’re called PDE-5 inhibitors and the chemical name is tadalafil hydrochloride.
The drugs are a type of medicine called a phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitor.
The drugs are designed to treat a group of problems in the penis, called cavernosal fibrosis or fibrosis, caused by a disorder called scleroderma.
Doctors believe this condition causes inflammation of the arteries, which help blood flow to the penis. This helps men achieve and keep an erection, and is also linked to an increased risk of developing heart attacks and strokes. PDE-5 inhibitors are often the first line of treatment for these problems.
The drug will be introduced in the UK in late 2018.
The drug will be tested on a sample of people who suffer from erectile dysfunction and in people who have no signs of the disorder.
In a separate study, Pfizer said that a small number of men who take PDE-5 inhibitors for their symptoms of erectile dysfunction also have an increased risk of heart disease.
The company said it would test the drug on patients with mild to moderate erectile dysfunction. It said that a small number of patients were able to achieve and maintain an erection satisfactory for sexual activity.
It will be tested on people with mild to moderate erectile dysfunction who don’t have signs of the disorder.
The drug is designed to be taken as a tablet, and should be swallowed whole with water.
The drug is also intended to help patients who experience nausea, vomiting, lightheadedness and diarrhoea.
Pfizer said that patients suffering from mild to moderate erectile dysfunction should contact a healthcare professional for advice.
It will be available over the counter in pharmacies, supermarkets and convenience stores in the UK, including Boots and CVS.
Dr Sarah Thompson, president of the British Association for Sexual Medicine and Men’s Health, said: “The potential benefits of using this treatment outweigh the risks and is a clinically proven and safe option for many men, particularly those who have mild to moderate erectile dysfunction.
“Our study is one of many studies that Pfizer has undertaken to support the future development of this treatment for men with erectile dysfunction, and this is a significant milestone in our efforts to further expand access to this important medication.”
She added that Pfizer’s research had shown that the drug helped men achieve and maintain an erection satisfactory for sexual activity.
She further added: “The development of a treatment for erectile dysfunction is a significant clinical milestone in the management of this condition.”
Dr Sarah Thompson, president of the British Association for Sexual Medicine and Men’s Health, said that the first clinical trial showed that the treatment helped men who had erectile dysfunction to achieve and maintain an erection satisfactory for sexual activity.She further added that there was a “large number of men” who could achieve and maintain an erection satisfactory for sexual activity. “This trial found that patients who took the drug for more than 4 weeks had increased blood flow to the penis, which helped them achieve and maintain an erection satisfactory for sexual activity.”
Pfizer also said that it was working with the FDA to develop the drug for the UK.
The drug will be available to patients as an oral tablet in pharmacies, supermarkets and convenience stores, and it is expected to be sold by Novartis by the first half of this year.

The United States Food and Drug Administration is advising consumers not to purchase or use Vigra Soft, a product promoted and sold for sexual enhancement on various websites and in some retail stores.
FDA laboratory analysis confirmed that Vigra Soft contains sildenafil, the active ingredient in Viagra, a medication used to treat erectile dysfunction. FDA initially approved Vigra Soft in June 2018, but has since been reapproved for use in the United States and other countries.
